The Kitchen, Part 1

Posted on May 18th, 2012 by KMay

The kitchen took a long time, but today’s post is just about one aspect – the cabinets.

The kitchen has some potential. The appliances are almost all new(er), the floor and the backsplash are ceramic tile. The layout isn’t great, but it doesn’t completely suck. BUT if there was one thing that I did not like about this house when we looked at it, it was the kitchen cabinets. Two words: Honey Oak. Bleeech.  Okay, that’s three words, but I really don’t like honey oak.  I wanted cherry.  So I decided I was going to refinish them.   Oh, and the drawers were all messed up.  Fortunately, one of my work friends has a whole wood shop and helped me out with fixing them.

I had to decide how I wanted to do the color. I could do the traditional strip/stain/poly route, I could do a gel stain that would take forever to dry, or I could do this other thing that I found. I was surfing the web and stumbled upon Rustoleum Cabinet Transformations.  Two coats, a glaze and a top coat. I could handle that.

I bought the kit, read the instructions, pulled everything apart, set everything out, and got started.

The hardware was brassy and had to go. I picked brushed nickel knobs to go in their place, so I had to fill the top holes in each door. Then came the “deglossing” phase.  And that’s where I jacked up my hand.  Ouch.  So that put me a few days behind, you know?  But finally, with the help of some latex gloves for the borked hand, I got back to work.

These are with one coat of color:

(and yes, we do know that the under sink area is disgusting. We still are figuring out how we’re going to fix that, because contact paper by itself will not cut it)

I will be honest, at this point, I was skeptical. The color was weird and streaky and it wasn’t quite as thick as I was expecting and I think I was hoping for better coverage with one coat.  Fortunately, it got better with the second coat.

The kit comes with a “decorative glaze” that’s optional. I tried it on the back of one door and decided that it gave the color a nice depth, so then that meant I had to do ALL of the doors.  I’ll be honest, at that point, I was tired of coating everything, drying, flipping and coating again.

And then there was a top coat. It’s the consistency of Elmer’s glue, and smells about the same. It also didn’t dry as neatly as I was expecting, so I have some touch ups to do.

The hinges were fully functional, so I spray painted them to match the knobs I bought (spray paint is awesome).  I put my fun new cordless drill back into use to put everything back together and got this:

The color is way prettier in natural light, but by the time I finished it all, I was down to overhead florescent.  It really brings out the color of the counter (a kind of greenish gray) and goes well with the tile backsplash. Also, you’ll notice the horrible ivy border is gone, because we’re painting this all one nice color.

I’d have to say that overall, I’m pretty satisfied with how they turned out. You can still see the wood grain under the color.  There are a few spots I have left to fix, but they’re overall good to go!

Bedroom Eyes

Posted on May 16th, 2012 by KMay

Ladies and Gentlemen, may I introduce the master bedroom.  Pretty standard stuff. Same Peachy Beige Blandness on the walls, some ratty mini blinds, and a boob light. Here’s the view from the hallway door:

Here’s the view from the bathroom:

The light switch had a fan control on it, and one of the things we dislike about the apartment is that the ceiling fan is in the living room and not above the bed.  So obviously, we were going to add a fan.

The biggest argument we had was about the color. I wanted a light green or blue. He didn’t. So we went and stared at paint chips for a while. After a bunch of back and forth rejections, he picked one out, and went “what about this one?” “REALLY?” “What, you don’t like it?” “Yeah, I like it, I just didn’t figure it would be something YOU’D like.”    We bought it, went home and two coats later, we have this:

I believe the color is called Jekyll San Souci (WTF???), but I refer to it as Pool Table Green.  I love it.

Also note the kickass new fan. The blades are the same cherry color as our bedroom set, and when it spins it looks like katanas whirling.  Dangerous but awesome.

We are super happy with the way this turned out.  Since I took these pictures, we put up some 2 inch plantation blinds in the window, which add a lot to the look.  I can’t wait to sleep in here!

Making an Entrance

Posted on May 14th, 2012 by KMay

One of the simplest changes in our whole Redo has been in the foyer. It’s a perfectly fine foyer, just kind of…blah.  It is our intent to change the door eventually (check the blown weatherstripping in the door windows), but it’s not terrible as it is.   The walls are the same peachy neutral that the contractors painted every other wall in the house.  However, we are not really used to sidelights and would prefer something more private. And the wooden switch plates? HAVE TO GO.

While we were looking at window film for the bathroom, I noticed these Sidelight Solutions on the next shelf down and decided we’d give them a try.

First, let me say that the ordinary window film was super easy to put on the bathroom window (you’ll see that eventually). Unfortunately, these did not cooperate as well.  Same company, same application process, but these did not want to stick. It seemed like the sidelight film didn’t have as much or had crappier adhesive on it than the stuff we put on the bathroom window. I wound up having to actually tape theedges down until it cured.  Lame.

The end result though, is pretty cool:

I am a sucker for stained glass.  It even looks cool from the outside!

And did you catch the chandelier?  I think it’s pretty cool looking.  That’s going to stay.

One area marked as DONE!

Meet the House

Posted on May 12th, 2012 by KMay

So I’ve finally gotten some time to sit and upload pictures and start writing – it’s time to meet the new house!

You’ve already seen the outside, but instead of giving you a photo tour of the inside all at once, I’m going to reveal the inside room by room as we finish the renovations.

Here’s some backstory…The place was built in 1998, so it’s not THAT old, but it’s not new. It was a foreclosure, so it’s not in the best shape. There’s nothing horribly wrong with it, structure-wise, just lots of little things that need to be fixed. Unfortunately, the little things add up to lots of money and my bank account is crying already. We were lucky and got the selling bank to fix a few things before closing, but the rest is up to us.
Inside, there’s a lot of painting to do. Thankfully, the bank went through and put in new carpet (beigey tan) and painted everything this neutral peachy color. It’s ok, but definitely not our style for most of the rooms.  Lots of repairing of little things here and there. And cleaning, because oh lordy, there was some nastiness.  Lots of work to do. We’ve been working every weekend since we closed and I’ve been there in my spare time after work on days I didn’t have to go to class.

We’ve got a nice big yard with more trees than I thought. We will have to do a little bit of landscaping.  We are the property that is adjacent to the neighborhood pond. We have geese that come munch in the yard every day (and two little baby geese!).  We’re probably not the worst looking place on the street, but there’s some work to be done.

So get ready, because I’m writing up some before and “in process” posts.  Once we actually get moved in and have things where we want, I’ll do some follow ups with the “after” shots.
It’s coming!!!

The Graduate

Posted on May 9th, 2012 by KMay

Friday night , May 11th, I will graduate with my associate’s degree from PVCC.

I will be the first person in my immediate family to have earned a college degree.

I am 31 years old and can finally cross a major thing off my list. I can stop feeling sad, empty and defeated every fall, because I’ve finally finished something I started a long time ago. It has taken me 6 years (total, including my time at JMU) to complete a two year degree.

I have worked long hours and gave up some fun stuff to keep up my grades. Now I have a 4.0 to show for it.

Sometimes life doesn’t go the way you plan, but you still get there in the end.

But it’s done.

Catching Up

Posted on May 4th, 2012 by KMay

funny cat pictures - Lolcats: o hai.
see more Lolcats and funny pictures, and check out our Socially Awkward Penguin lolz!

I still exist, it’s just been a hectic week or two. Not to mention that trying to type with a jacked up hand kind of sucks. Guess how many times you use your pinky while keyboarding? All the damn time.

Anyway.

School is now over! I’m done! Final exam was last night and now the only thing I have left is the actual graduation. I have already been stalking the grades today, even though I know nothing will probably be posted until Monday.  Either way, I am ridiculously happy to have my evenings back.

The house is coming along. I’m starting to have some before and after photos, so once I actually get some more time to sit and resize and do some posts, expect to see some of that pop up soon. BUT since the semi-intentional web-restriction worked pretty well for getting things done, it might continue until we move in.

How have you been?

This is partly what has been taking up all my time lately. Almost done with these, but still a long way to go on the rest of the place.

How I Spent My Weekend

Posted on April 23rd, 2012 by KMay

Short form? in pain.

So this weekend we went to work on the house, as is the usual plan these days. He went to work on the bathroom faucets and I started prepping the kitchen cabinets for refinishing.

I was about halfway through the sanding/scrubbing process when a piece of wood broke off the edge of one of the doors and forced its way through my glove and into my hand between my pinky and ring finger. Expletives were uttered. Loudly. Followed by crying.

DH came in to find me still kneeling on the floor, unable to actually move, and dragged me to the sink. I pulled off the glove, pulled out the shard and continued crying because HOLYFUCKTHATHURTS. He rinsed out the wound, and made me take a breather.

Things weren’t that bad except that I couldn’t really bend my pinky without collapsing and wanting to punch someone with my good hand. So after a few hours of me crying because I was scared and in pain and oh yeah, there’s this lump here in my palm, we headed off to the ER. Xrays were taken, found inconclusive. They called in the hand surgeon and he spent an hour or two playing with my tendons and pulling out a few more tiny splinters, while I spent that time with my sweatshirt over my face so that I wouldn’t accidentally look, trying desperately to think of Anything Else but scalpels and nerves.

Nothing like a little surgery to spice up the weekend, right?

So he finally declared me good to go, issued me vicodin and antibiotics, and sent me home.

Then came the adventure.
First off: what kind of devil pharmacist sees an injured hand and gives you the bottles with the caps you have to press and turn?

Second, what kind of idiot takes vicodin for fun? Because being dizzy, almost barfing and then waking up screaming on the bathroom floor after passing out? NOT MY IDEA OF FUN. Just saying…

I used to think I was mostly ambidextrous, but apparently not so much. I am getting most of the feeling back in my pinky, and I can actually bend it now, so that’s good. Still not very functional. Tying my hair back is pointless at the moment, because I can’t pull the hair ties.

I have a follow up with the surgeon this week, and hopefully this incision heals fast, because Nurse DH is going to be leaving to take care of his mom soon. And I am a complete baby about seeing open wounds in my body.

So that’s what I’ve been up to. And now I’m going to be a week behind on my cabinets.
